The Effects Of Air Pollution On Human Health And / Or The...

Air pollution refers to a â€Å"broad range of contaminates† (Brimblecombe Atkins, 2013, p.20) found in the atmosphere that are harmful to human health and/or the environment. While air pollution can, at its most simplistic, be defined as â€Å"any input of chemical, aerosol, or particulate† (Blauvelt Gates, 2011, p. 17) found to be deleterious and airborne, the term can be subdivided in many ways by source, components, and mode of formation. (Blauvelt Gates, 2011, p. 17) Typically, an essential distinction is made between primary and secondary sources of emission. Primary air pollution is released directly from its source (e.g. carbon monoxide–CO– from a car s exhaust pipe) while secondary emissions are formed in the atmosphere itself (for example, ozone–O3–is almost entirely created in the atmosphere), almost always through photochemical (i.e. involving light, in this case sunlight) processes (WHO, 2006). In addition to source, air pollution is further classified by basic composition: either in a gaseous or particulate form. Gases (and vapors) are analyzed at the molecular level and because of their small size they â€Å"are readily taken into the human respiratory system† (WHO, 2006, p.10) which presents a health risk. Common gaseous pollutants include carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, ozone, methane, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. Particulate matter (PM) is defined as material in solid or liquid phase suspended in the atmosphere (WHO, 2006, p. 11) and is divided byShow MoreRelatedThe Effects Of Air Pollution On Human Health850 Words   |  4 Pagesincreasing, so does pollution. The debate associated with this contamination on the environment has to do with how much should be done to stop pollution, and whether or not this is a serious enough issue to be concerned with. Well, this issue should disturb people. The most frightening point about it is that these poisonous impurities infect the Earth in multiple forms, including air pollution and water pollution. Each day the air around us is becoming more polluted as the amount of carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere caused by human activities increases each day. As population continues to gradually increase, it is causing harmful effects in terms of air pollution. An increase in the number of people directly varies with the pollution that is emitted into the environment. Moreso, the human population is polluting the air due to the use of vehicles such asRead MoreThe Hazardous Effects of Pollution to the Environment and Human Health.Docx Uploaded Successfully1376 Words   |  6 PagesThe Hazardous Effects of Pollution to the Environment and Human Health Abstract Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into the natural environment that causes adverse change. It can take the form of chemical substances or energy. Pollutants, the components of pollution, can be either foreign substances/energies or naturally occurring contaminants. It is any discharge of material or energy into water, land, or air that causes or may cause acute (short-term) or chronic (long-term) detrimentRead MoreThe Effects Of Air Pollution On The Environment Essay1198 Words   |  5 Pageselements. With economic growth, population growth, rising living standards, human consumption of resources demand has been on the rise. As the majority of resources are limited and non-renewable, if the consumption pattern continues to follow, the recoverable reserves of resources will continue to decline, the sustainability of the supply of resources, will seriously endanger human survival and development.
